Helping out at Eltham Men’s Shed

Fort Knox Self Storage helps a number of charity and community based organisations throughout the year. One of those is The Eltham Men’s Shed. For this week’s blog we thought we would have a look at how Eltham Men’s Shed came into existence and what they have been up to lately.

The Eltham Men’s Shed came into fruition in July this year with it’s first AGM only after a lot of hard work by a steering committee that started in December 2013. At present, the group meets and operates from a building within the grounds of the Eltham Retirement Village(formerly Judge Book Retirement Village) and are using a Fort Knox Storage Unit to house their things until a permanent Shed is established.
Members(generally retired men) are able to come together for camaraderie, to learn new ‘hands on’ skills and to help within the local community.
Eltham Men’s Shed has some twenty six interested men.

One of the more recent projects that the group has been working on involves ‘Montmorency Community Group’ who are trying to help ‘Sugar Gliders’ survive within green belts in our district. Eltham Men’s Shed has been hard at work painting breeding boxes for them.

Most of the public who are aware of Men’s Shed throughout Australia think of the groups as being wood working groups, but that is generally false. Each group defines their main interest as they develop. Some groups do woodwork, work on vegetable patches, restore old cars, learn about computers, etc. Eltham’s group has men working on vegie patches, learning how to cook as well as learning digital photography and home maintenance.
Their aim is to eventually have their own shed and to this end they are endeavouring to fundraise and are in regular conversation with the Nillumbik Council re possible sites.
